Mac camera, microphone or screen recording not working: check the right permission

Check app, browser and macOS permissions separately, then test the selected input without granting unrelated access.

Permission is one layer. The app’s selected device and a website’s browser permission can matter independently.

Describe what is missing

Separate a black camera image, silent microphone, missing screen selection and an app that never asks for permission. Record whether the problem affects one app, one website or every app. Use a brief, non-sensitive test rather than starting with a private meeting or screen.

Check the relevant macOS category

In recent macOS versions, open System Settings > Privacy & Security. Review Camera, Microphone, or Screen & System Audio Recording as appropriate; category names differ on older releases. Find the app you intend to use and grant only the capability that task needs.

Apple explains that the Camera list contains installed apps that have requested access. An absent entry is not automatically evidence that access was denied. Open the app’s relevant feature and follow its request or vendor instructions. Some built-in apps have camera access without appearing like third-party apps.

For a website, check the browser too

A browser may have macOS permission while a particular website is blocked. In Safari, review Settings > Websites for the site’s camera or microphone choice. Other browsers have their own site controls. Confirm that the address is the intended service before granting access.

Confirm the actual input and retest

  1. Check the camera or microphone selected in the app.
  2. Close a test or call you no longer need.
  3. Follow any macOS instruction to quit and reopen the app after a permission change.
  4. Repeat a short test and check both the local preview and what the receiver gets.

Record the difference after each change. Do not grant Full Disk Access or Accessibility simply because a camera test failed; those permissions answer different requests.

When a setting is unavailable

Work or school policy, Screen Time restrictions, an unsupported device or hardware trouble can require a different route. Ask the administrator or follow Apple’s camera troubleshooting. Avoid broad Terminal permission resets that remove unrelated choices.

Tend can help explain available permission evidence, but it cannot grant itself or another app access. LearnHubPlay’s Mac security review puts sensitive permissions into a wider checklist.
