Work & travel guide
Prepare a Mac for offline work: test the actual task before leaving
Check local files, dependencies, battery and a recoverable copy before travelling or working without a reliable connection.
Define one complete job
Choose the assignment, presentation, project or editing session you need to finish. List its source files, linked assets, reference material and required apps. “The folder is on my Mac” is not enough if the project opens a remote font, package, account or model later.
Check local file availability
In iCloud Drive, use Finder’s status information and supported Download Now or Keep Downloaded controls where your macOS version provides them. Wait for required transfers to finish. Other cloud providers use different controls; check their documentation.
Apple distinguishes cloud-only, downloaded and kept-downloaded items. Deleting a synced item is different from removing a local download and can affect other devices. Use the provider’s intended availability control.
Rehearse a realistic offline session
- Save and close the project, after syncing finishes.
- Disconnect from the network deliberately at a convenient time.
- Reopen the app and project.
- Complete a small version of the task, including export or build if needed.
- Record missing resources, then reconnect and resolve them.
For developers, include dependencies, toolchains, containers and access to required credentials. A lockfile is not a downloaded dependency. For creators, open linked media and test the intended output rather than only viewing a thumbnail.
Leave headroom for the work
Allow for new output, temporary work and a reserve on each destination volume. Use your application’s requirements and a test run to inform the assumptions. A planning sum is not a guarantee that a long render will finish. Avoid deleting the resources you just verified you need offline.
Prepare power and recovery
Check the correct charger, expected workload and current battery condition. Confirm that an independent copy of important work is available and that you know how to access it. A local snapshot on the same Mac cannot protect against losing the whole device.
Tend provides available storage, battery and backup evidence. An automatic all-in-one offline readiness check is not a shipped feature: this guide is a manual checklist. If you are also changing computers, use LearnHubPlay’s new Mac migration checklist.
