Tend on the Mac App Store or direct download?

Tend’s Mac App Store and direct editions differ in their access and available actions. The App Store is the verified public installation path. Direct-download availability is separate from the capability comparison below.

Start with the Store edition for health and selected-folder review. The direct edition adds system controls, developer tools and automation, but its advertised release address was not publicly accessible on October 19, 2026. Check availability before planning around those tools.

What the Mac App Store edition includes

The current Store listing describes Health history, Timeline comparisons, selected-folder storage exploration, large-file review, exact duplicates, similar-photo review, battery observations, drive evidence, and backup/encryption evidence. App intelligence is read-only. Device-reported fields depend on what macOS exposes.

Optional Gemini assistance requires your own billing-enabled API project and an explicit Send action. The Store edition cannot run system actions through the assistant. You can use the core local tools without setting up AI.

Understand the folder permission

The Store edition runs in Apple's sandbox. Choose the folder you want Tend to review when macOS asks. A scan can only describe what that access makes visible; it does not establish that the rest of your disk is empty or healthy. If access is denied or a drive is unavailable, review the permission or reconnect it before interpreting the result.

When the direct edition is useful

The direct edition adds tools such as known-cache cleanup, app removal, developer-cache review, process and port controls, startup changes, and maintenance schedules. These actions have broader consequences than a read-only inventory. Read the confirmation and save active work before stopping a process or changing startup behavior.

Install the edition you chose

  1. Open the official Tend App Store listing, confirm the developer is Manoj Mallick, and check compatibility. The listing checked on October 19, 2026 requires macOS 12 or later.
  2. For the direct edition, check current availability. The previously advertised public release URL was unavailable on October 19, 2026; do not install an unverified mirror. Requirements, release notes and verification details must accompany a future public release.
  3. After installing, start with a read-only view or a small chosen folder. Grant additional access only when the feature needs it.

A list of inaccessible locations is a coverage limit, not a reason to grant every permission. If your goal is simply to find a large download or understand battery drain, begin with the least access needed.

Know which guide applies

Guides on this site label direct-only actions. A missing Developer, Automation, or system-control page in the Store edition is expected. Read the feature guide and installation support when comparing capabilities; newly developed source features may arrive in a later packaged release.
