Tend features for Mac

Tend combines Mac health history, storage evidence, recoverable cleanup, hardware signals, and optional AI guidance in one app. Core analysis runs on your Mac, and uncertain or unavailable measurements are shown as such instead of being presented as zero.

Health history and change intelligence

The Health page summarizes current evidence as an A-F score. Tend Timeline keeps bounded local baselines so you can compare two points in time and understand what changed across storage, installed apps, startup items, battery, drives, backups, and encryption.

Choose General, Developer, or Creator shortcuts, then investigate a storage, battery, startup, app, or backup symptom against 7, 30, or 90 days of local Timeline evidence. Tend shows ranked review steps and explicitly labels timing correlations as clues rather than causes. Feedback remains on this Mac. For support, preview the exact Markdown handoff, add an optional one-time note, and save the report yourself. It excludes feedback, logs, file contents, and workspace file lists, and attempts to redact paths and common contact identifiers. Selected workspaces also show a 30-day size trend after four complete manual checkpoints across three days on the same volume; it estimates folder size, not total disk capacity.

• Opt in to up to eight chosen folders or external-volume folders and measure only when you click.
• Compare aggregate folder sizes with a 25,000-entry and 15-second cap, skipped symlinks, and visible partial-coverage reasons. File names and contents are never retained.
• Set growth and low-free-space thresholds or protect work folders from Tend cleanup. Policy alerts appear after a measurement; Tend does not scan workspaces in the background.
• The Mac App Store build stores a local macOS security-scoped bookmark for each chosen folder so the selected permission can be reopened for later measurements.

Storage and file review

Choose a folder or storage source and inspect its hierarchy without uploading an inventory. Folder totals are cancellable estimates, symlinks are not traversed, and permission or timeout gaps remain visible.

Safe cleanup and recovery

Tend previews selected cleanup targets and moves supported items to the Trash. Cleanup history records reported moved bytes separately from observed free-space change, while the Recovery Center tracks eligible undo operations.

Battery, drives, and resilience

Review battery capacity, cycles, drain sessions, sleep blockers, and energy-heavy processes alongside storage capacity, SMART or NVMe evidence, backup freshness, FileVault status, and local snapshots. Drive Health can estimate when an external or removable volume may fall below 10% free from stable-identity-matched Timeline baselines; short, stale, interrupted, or capacity-changed histories do not produce a forecast.

• External-volume free-space trends require at least seven daily baselines spanning seven days and a measurement in the latest baseline.
• Optional bounded filesystem benchmarks for a writable folder you choose.
• Same-source, same-size benchmark history without retaining the selected path.
• Read-only Time Machine, FileVault, APFS, and local snapshot evidence.
• Honest unknown states when macOS or the hardware does not expose a value.

Apps, startup, processes, and development

Tend inventories applications and operational signals so you can review provenance and resource use before making changes.

• App size, version, architecture, receipt, signing, and likely update provenance.
• Legacy login items and modern Background Task Management records.
• Processes, listening ports, network activity, sleep blockers, and energy impact.
• Developer cache review for npm, Gradle, Maven, Docker, and related tools.

Optional AI and voice input

The Assistant uses your own billing-enabled Google Gemini project. Tend previews the bounded context it plans to send, labels AI output, and requires separate approval before supported actions. Apple's on-device recognizer converts dictated audio into editable text; no recording is saved or uploaded.

Edition and permission differences

The Mac App Store edition is sandboxed and limits access to user-selected folders. System-wide cleanup, process control, startup changes, app removal, and external app-update checks are unavailable in that edition. Availability also depends on the macOS version, hardware, permissions, and evidence exposed by the operating system.
